A Brief Note on MIG TIG and Spot Welding

In the manufacturing industry, 3 common types of welding processes are used. They are MIG welding, TIG welding, and spot welding. These processes are extremely beneficial and ideal for different automotive applications. Here we will discuss these common welding processes in brief.


MIG welding

Metal inert gas or MIG welding is a very common welding technique where a consumable wire electrode is used to join similar and dissimilar metals. This process is generally ideal for aluminium. The Argon is used as an inert gas. MIG is also known as gas metal arc welding or GMAW process. The standard diameter of the wired electrode is 1.2 mm. The major equipment of MIG welding is welding gun, power source, wire feeder, shielding gas, and regulators. It is widely used in different industries such as the automobile industry, the pipeline industry, sheet metal industry, pressure vessel industry, etc. It is also used for alloy wheel welding purposes.

TIG welding

TIG or Tungsten Inert Gas is the most common arc welding technique where the non consumable electrode is used to join similar and dissimilar metals. Argon and helium are the common shielding inert gases. As similar to MIG welding, TIG is also known as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding or GTAW. This process is widely used to join stainless steel with different kinds of non-ferrous materials like magnesium, copper, aluminium, etc. The main components of this welding process are welding torch, consumable electrode, shielding gas, regulators and power source. The thickness of a consumable electrode generally varies from 1.5 mm to 3 mm. TIG is widely used in the aerospace industry, the bicycle industry, the alloy wheel repair industry, etc.

Spot welding

Spot welding is also known as a resistance welding process where two copper electrodes are used to join thin metal sheets. The thickness range of the metal shits varies from 0.5 mm to 3 mm approx. The main components of resistance welding are tool holder, pedal and copper electrodes. The electrodes have low resistance and available in several sizes and shapes. They generally take less than 0.5 seconds to weld metals. However, the time depends upon the thickness of the metals. This welding process is commonly used in car frame manufacturing industry, sheet metal industry, etc. It is cost-effective and the production rate is very high. Apart from that, no filler metals or fluxes are required in this welding process.

So, these are all about MIG, TIG and spot welding processes. These processes are highly cost-effective and give effective performances as compared to other welding techniques.
