How does each of them works?
Every pump falls in these two categories. Among them, centrifugal is the most common. However, speaking of positive displacement pumps, they come in a wider variety. Some of them are lobe, gear, screw, peristaltic, etc.
Radial flow pump is the most common type of centrifugal pump. It has a rotating impeller in the shape of a fan that creates a vacuum for the free movement of fluid. The impeller rotates within the casing and reduces pressure at the inlet. This motion helps to drive the fluid with immense pressure, letting to discharge.
Also, some centrifugal pumps have axial flow that utilises an impeller in the shape of curved propeller. Axial flow moves fluid by drawing it into their axis and using the impeller to send fluid out on the other side of the pump, something similar to a turbine.
On the contrary, positive displacement pumps have a compartment in which the dragged fluid is poured from an inlet and moved to an outlet for discharge. The system uses a rotary, reciprocating, or a diaphragm method to move the fluid. The main difference between a centrifugal and displacement pump is that the latter moves fluid at the same speed regardless of the pressure on the inlet end while centrifugal pumps will not. A common example of positive displacement pump is viking pump.
Which pumps are used in oil and gas industry?
Both can be used in the oil and gas industry. Generally, they are used as a part of tri-phase or multiphase pumping applications in which two or more types of pumps are used to accommodate the fluids. It is a process that reduce equipment costs with improved installation and production.
What is the use of positive displacement pump?
A positive displacement pump is required when a liquid is too viscous to handle. The capacity of PD pumps is consistent as the output is dependent on the basic design of the pump and the speed of its driving mechanism.
